Vikings player achieves AFL dream

We are pleased to announce that ex-Blackburn Vikings Basketballer Max Otten has been drafted by the Sydney Swans.

Otten was picked up on Tuesday in the Australian Football League’s Rookie Draft at pick number 21.

“I was on the computer in my room, refreshing the page to see if I was drafted” he said.

Otten’s lengthy junior career at the Vikings began in the under 12s and since then, has stretched across ten years, playing in many Victorian Championship participating teams before finishing his most recent season with Blackburn in 2009.

The new Sydney Swan explains that there are a lot of similarities between the two games of basketball and football; “Basketball helped a lot with my fitness for football and my growth as a player and an athlete…My time at the Vikings assisted my development and also enabled me to meet a wide range of friends, players and coaches throughout my junior career.”

The young defender is excited to take on the upcoming challenge in the Harbour City and explains that ‘Getting into an AFL system and meeting all the players and coaches” is what he looking forward to the most.

From the whole Vikings community, we congratulate Max again and wish him well for his future endeavours in the AFL.
